The Patriots are 5-3 and alone in second place in the AFC East after splitting their last two games: a 30-24 loss at Chicago on Thursday night, Oct. 22, and a 24-19 win at Miami on Sunday in which they trailed 13-3 at halftime and then scored 21 straight points. Drake Maye had a hand in all three touchdowns at Hard Rock Stadium, and the defense sacked Malik Willis five times. Green Bay comes to Gillette Stadium on Sunday, and the week after that the Patriots play Detroit in Munich. Here are both games from ESPN's box scores, and the schedule ahead.
The last two games
Patriots 24, Dolphins 19 · Sunday, Nov. 1, at Miami
The first half went badly. Efton Chism III fumbled after a catch at the Patriots' 18 in the first quarter, setting up a Miami field goal; Andy Borregales missed a 40-yarder wide right late in the second; and Willis capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Malik Washington with eight seconds left in the half for a 13-3 Miami lead. Hunter Henry left in the second quarter with a foot injury and did not return.
The second half was New England's. Maye's deep ball to Kyle Williams was ruled incomplete, Mike Vrabel challenged, and it became a 43-yard touchdown. On the next possession Maye led a 13-play, 73-yard drive and finished it himself from the 2 with 59 seconds left in the third quarter for a 17-13 lead. Kevin Byard intercepted Willis early in the fourth quarter, and two plays later DeMario Douglas caught a 48-yard touchdown for a 24-13 lead. Zane Gonzalez missed a 43-yard field goal wide left with 6:45 to play. Willis's 35-yard touchdown to Kevin Coleman Jr. with 2:04 left and a failed two-point try made it a five-point game, and Rhamondre Stevenson fell on the onside kick.
Maye completed 16 of 20 for 199 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions, a 141.5 passer rating, and ran for the third score. Douglas had three catches for 76 yards. Stevenson ran 19 times for 82 yards and Corey Kiner added 38 on seven carries. Cory Durden and Gabe Jacas had 1.5 sacks each; Christian Elliss had nine tackles and a half sack. New England played without A.J. Brown, TreVeyon Henderson, Mack Hollins and Romeo Doubs, and with backup guards in place of Mike Onwenu and Alijah Vera-Tucker, ESPN reported.
Bears 30, Patriots 24 · Thursday, Oct. 22, at Chicago
Chicago led from the first quarter and the Patriots never caught up. Maye threw for 321 yards on 24-of-31 passing with two touchdowns and an interception, and ran for another score. His 48-yard pass to Stevenson on the last play of the first half made it 20-14, and Eli Raridon's 30-yard catch in the third pulled New England within 27-21. Cairo Santos's 58-yard field goal with 1:34 left made it a two-score game, and Borregales's 47-yarder with 37 seconds to go only set the final margin. Caleb Williams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, and Luther Burden III caught four passes for 130 yards. The Patriots ran for 70 yards on 17 carries and were penalized 10 times for 71 yards; the turnover margin, one of Vrabel's stated priorities, was 1-0 against them, ESPN's Mike Reiss noted.
Against the DraftKings lines ESPN lists, the Patriots did not cover as 7-point favorites at Miami, and Chicago covered as a 3-point favorite. Both games went over their totals, 41.5 in Miami and 50.5 in Chicago. Each final's recap and closing line is on its game page: Chicago, Miami.
Through eight games Maye has 15 touchdown passes and eight interceptions, three of those in the opener at Seattle; he has accounted for at least three touchdowns in five straight games. Henry leads the team with 29 catches, and Douglas leads in receiving yards (332) and touchdown catches (four).
